The name
Martelée
In French, martelé means "hammered." In classical violin, it names one of the most sophisticated, clean articulations a player can produce — a sharp, perfectly defined bow stroke built from a deliberate catch of the string, then an instant release.
Skip the catch and the note has no clarity. Hold the pressure and the sound chokes. The art lives in the exact balance between the two — control applied with absolute precision, then released at speed.
